Reducing Energy Consumption

De-inking old newspapers and magazines to produce pulp for newsprint manufacture uses one-sixth of the energy required to produce pulp from raw wood, reducing output of greenhouse gases.

Greenhouse Challenge

Newsprint supplier Norske Skog is a participant in the Commonwealth Government's Greenhouse Challenge Program. Company initiatives between 1990 and 2000 resulted in a 17% reduction in net greenhouse emissions. Emissions per tonne of newsprint have fallen by 31% over the same period.

Truck loading newsprint reelsThe main contributors to this achievement were lower energy use due to the introduction of recycled fibre and more efficient use of energy and steam. The company also owns significant areas of plantation, which act as carbon sinks.

More efficient transportation has also been achieved by transporting waste paper back to Albury for recycling in the same trucks that carry the finished product (newsprint) to the newspaper publishers.
