Reducing Water Consumption

Making paper requires water, which must be disposed of after use. To cut down on water consumption, a mixture of fresh water and reused water is used to create the pulp for newsprint making. When the water is unable to be reused it is treated and discharged.

Reducing Water Emissions

At Norske Skog’s Albury Mill, located on the Murray River, a $10 million project was undertaken to stop discharges of treated waste water altogether. A large storage dam was constructed and over 350 hectares of irrigated forest was planted adjacent to the Mill. The water used in the paper making process now undergoes primary and secondary treatment before being used to irrigate these pine plantations.

Norske Skog has also worked hard to improve the quality of its treated process water at its Boyer Mill in Tasmania, and has spent over $20 million on an effluent treatment plant.
