The Message » Our Objectives
The Publishers National Environment Bureau today operates in an increasingly complex world, where thankfully the protection of our environment and the sustainability of our industries and resources are crucial issues for all of us.
Because of this, the publishing industry has a far broader focus than its initial aims and the work of PNEB clearly reflects this.
Australia's recycling rate
28% in 1990 to 78.7% in 2010
Objectives for 2011 and beyond are more ambitious than those of simply meeting paper recycling targets and include extended producer responsibility, minimising energy usage and water consumption in production, the diversion of waste from landfill, greenhouse gas reduction and reducing the publishing industry’s impact on climate change. Our evolving objectives are descibed in detail in our Industry Plans. These can be found on our About PNEB pages.
Notwithstanding, a major objective of PNEB remains the promotion of newspapers and magazines as sustainable resources, which if recycled properly, can be used again and again.
Australia has exceeded annual targets for recycling rates in each and every year of the existence of PNEB; a record of which we can all be proud. Today, research has shown we recycle around 82% of available newspaper, a rise from a target of a 40% national newsprint recycling rate in 1995.
